Quick answer: 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%.
Here's how to get both values, and why the method works for any fraction.
1/4 as a decimal
A fraction is just a division. To turn 1/4 into a decimal, divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator):
1 ÷ 4 = 0.25
So 1/4 = 0.25.
1/4 as a percent
"Percent" means "per hundred", so to convert a decimal to a percent you multiply by 100 (move the decimal point two places to the right):
0.25 × 100 = 25%
So 1/4 = 25%.
You can also go straight from the fraction: scale it so the denominator is 100. Since 4 × 25 = 100, multiply top and bottom by 25:
1/4 = 25/100 = 25%
The general method (any fraction)
- To a decimal: divide numerator by denominator.
- To a percent: multiply that decimal by 100 and add a
%sign.
For example, the same steps turn 3/4 into 0.75 and 75% — see 3/4 as a percent and decimal.
Where 1/4 shows up
One-quarter is everywhere: 25% off a sale price, a quarter of an hour (15 minutes), or 0.25 in measurements. Recognising that a quarter = 0.25 = 25% instantly makes mental math faster.
