Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)

How it works

    Each letter grade maps to a grade-point value on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, and so on, with +/− adjustments).

  2. 2

    Multiply each course’s grade points by its number of credit hours to get its “quality points”.

  3. 3

    Add up the quality points for all courses, and add up all the credit hours.

  4. 4

    Divide total quality points by total credit hours to get your GPA.

Worked examples

Three-course semester

A (4.0) in a 3-credit class, B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit class, A− (3.7) in a 3-credit class.

  1. Quality points: (4.0×3) + (3.3×4) + (3.7×3) = 12 + 13.2 + 11.1 = 36.3
  2. Total credits: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
  3. GPA = 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63

Answer: GPA ≈ 3.63

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA is the sum of (grade points × credit hours) for every course, divided by the total credit hours. Higher-credit courses count more toward your average.
What is the 4.0 GPA scale?
On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, and so on, down to F = 0.0.
Does this calculator handle different credit hours?
Yes. Enter the credit hours for each course and the calculator produces a credit-weighted GPA, just like your school does.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
A 3.5 GPA is generally considered very good — roughly a B+/A− average — and is competitive for most colleges and scholarships. Requirements vary by program.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA uses a flat 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. A weighted GPA adds extra points for honors or AP/IB classes (often on a 5.0 scale). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale.
